Fall Colors Hike at Stone Valley

A gorgeous fall day to take in the sights at Stone Valley while learning about the science behind leaf color change. Fall colors were at or near peak, and students from the SLU Communicating Nature class taught the group how to identify several tree species and why they show off their colors every autumn. Thanks to all who attended!

SLU Parents Weekend Hike at Stone Valley

It turned out to be a beautiful day on Saturday for the some St. Lawrence University students and parents to join the Nature Up North team for a hike at Stone Valley. Everyone had a great time taking in the fall views and learning about Nature Up North!

Red-backed Vole

While small mammal trapping on Sunday morning, along with deer mice and a flying squirrel we trapped this red-backed vole.

Giant Mountain Hike

One of the most scenic hikes that I've ever been on. Not that it was the most beautiful view that Ive ever had, although it was gorgeous, but about 20 minutes in we popped out of the tree's for a nice view. After that we had about 30 minutes before another view, but after that every five minutes we popped out of the trees onto some rocks that had amazing views!

Blue Jay on Sawteeth

The photo I posted is actually of the view from Pyramid Peak, which is a beautiful spot between the summits of Gothics and Sawteeth in the high peaks region. During St. Lawrence's annual Peak Weekend, hosted by the Outing Club, I was one of 12 who participated in a roughly 16-mile hike to Sawteeth. We detoured to Pyramid Peak for lunch and storytelling before summiting Sawteeth in the early afternoon on Saturday. The whole day was beautiful. What really caught my attention, however, I don't have a photo of.

Leopard Frogs on Kip Track

As I walked along the KIP track behind the Wachmeister Field Station at St.Lawrence University I happened to spot two adult leopard frogs sitting in a tiny creek before the first bridge set up along the trail. I am taking an amphibian course this fall,so i tried to catch one to get a better look but they both got away. I was, however, able to take a few pictures of one of the frog's gorgeous coloring. It was sunny out when I spotted them and it had just rained the night before.

Alone Time on the Ausable River

A crisp morning in solitude on the West Branch of the Ausable River. I hiked into a secluded bend halfway in-between Flume Falls and the Wilmington Bridge. The fishing was good. The big browns were hitting wooly buggers stripped from the bank.

Frogs in the Lower Great Range

My friends and I spent the day traversing through the lower great range in the Adirondack Park. It was a very long day, climbing over 6 mountains, 5 being high peaks. Near the beginning of our journey, we came across this little frog just relaxing on the side of the trail, there were a few more similar to this species, but we were not sure what species it actually is.
