This image was also taken during my reflective writing period along the Red Sand Stone trail. These trees were directly behind me while I was sitting and looking at the Grasse River. I spotted what appeared to be a few young Beech Trees growing amongst some mature Sugar Maples. I found this image interesting because we had just discussed in class how plants compete for sunlight and I thought that these young trees would have some trouble since they were surrounded by larger trees. The Beech tree is in the family fagaceae; they are native to Europe, Asia and North America. They can grow on a wide range of soil types, acidic or basic, provided they are not waterlogged. I North America it is not uncommon for them to grow with Sugar Maples forming Beech-Maple forests.
