Fish
Waddington Ice Fishing Derby 2017
A bitter-cold day on the St. Lawrence River called for a little ice-fishing exploration. Cole's Creek and Brady Brook were chock-full of icefishermen and women, who offered lots of advise and wisdom regarding the elusive way of the fish.
Whitefish Catch and Release
The Whitefish in this picture was not the species of fish I intended to catch on this particular day of fishing, but as temperatures grow cold some species seem to be more desperate than others. It struck this dry fly on the waters surface in a pool below the upper Allens Falls an area which is known to hold smallmouth bass, and various species of trout. Pertaining to the Salmonid family, this species migrates up stream to higher order streams in order to spawn.
Boy, what a catch! Too bad I got cold feet.
Thursday afternoon I got my feet wet, literally knee-deep, in the St. Regis River, just below the falls. This was my first adventure fly-fishing, and while I didn't catch any fish, I am hooked. For over 4 hours, I learned from one of my friends as well as a talented fly-fisherman, the basics. After 2 hours under his tutelage, I was let loose on the river. It was exhilarating, the prospect of emulating nature and taking the time to stop. Not only that, but the fish were brilliant!
Too big to swallow
I visited the US Fish and Wildlife area just outside of Richville, NY, on the Boland Rd. on May 14th. I drove through the preserve and as I crossed the bridge I saw this Great Blue Heron with a very large bullhead in its mouth. I witnessed the heron spear the fish several times to kill it. I watched the heron try repeatedly to swallow the fish but after around 30 minutes of watching I decided to leave the area and I do not know what happened to the fish or to the heron.
Hungry Browns
Lots of brown trout feeding on the West Branch of the St. Regis right now. Caught and released these hungry fish on a trusty old green weenie fly.
Pup on the Ausable
I went fishing on the Ausable River with my buddy Tommy and Ian. Tommy had just gotten an Austrian sheep dog named Keurl. He fished all afternoon with Keurl in the pouch of his waders. This was the last time I was able to fish during open trout season (ends on October 15th) although the Trout Management Areas (TMA) are open rear round. We caught one brown trout.
Fly Fishing at Allen's Falls Flow
The beautiful fall colors on the St. Regis River made for a perfect day of fly fishing with my friend Jeff. We caught a couple of Brown Trout, one bass and a few good size shiners.
Alone Time on the Ausable River
A crisp morning in solitude on the West Branch of the Ausable River. I hiked into a secluded bend halfway in-between Flume Falls and the Wilmington Bridge. The fishing was good. The big browns were hitting wooly buggers stripped from the bank.
Fishing In Colton
This trip was so fun because it was just my brother and two sisters on a boat at 5:00 in the morning!
