Canoeing / Kayaking

Loon Eggs on nest

Taking Hebron Yam on his first kayak excursion and we came upon this loons nest with 2 very large eggs of which only one loon survived. I suspect a snapping turtle or predatory bird had the other.

Wellesley Island Kayaking

Another fun trip to Wellesley, this time with the kayak. I stopped at the nature center to get some info on where to go. After talking with the volunteer I knew exactly where to go and how to get there. She also gave me a map, a kayak ID sticker, and reflective stickers for my paddle (for free!). She was extremely helpful and made the whole trip that much nicer. The water was so clear I could see the fish swimming underneath me. The weather was great and the water was not rough at all (granted I stay very close to shore). I plan on going back several more times.

Life is good!

Sunny, not so hot, just right...!

Evening Paddle on the Little River

Nature Up North and a crew of North Country paddlers got out on the Little River on a beautiful night on Thursday. The bugs were kind to us, and a few people enjoyed a little swim in the warm water. Look out on August 3rd for our last paddle of the summer!

Evening Paddle: Water Plants

Ten boats got on the water to join Nature Up North in a water-plant themed evening paddle on Thursday. The rain that was forecast to pour down on us disappeared and we were left with a gorgeous evening! We paddled along the Little River which opened up into the Grasse River, and we talked about the different types of water plants along the way. We learned about floating plants, submerged plants, emerged plants, and algae. We also learned some helpful tips on how to ID water plants.

Water Plants on the Little River

Beautifully calm afternoon to paddle around, learning about water plants on the Little River!

Exploring Massawepie

Took a recreational field trip to Lake Massawepie with my Adirondack Literature class! We had fun paddling the lake, exploring Arcadia, the yurt village where the Adirondack Semester from St. Lawrence University is, and checking out the Massawepie Mire. We spent the whole day in the sunshine, learning about and experiencing first hand a piece of this beautiful region we've been reading about all semester

Adirondack Freshwater Jellyfish

Paddling along the Raquette River from Long Lake, one wouldn't expect to find a marine species drifting down the current in freshwater! I was surprised to discover these freshwater jellyfish (about the size of a dime) floating along the surface of the river by the dozens on Saturday. Was able to find some more info about them here: https://adkwatershed.wordpress.com/2014/12/03/freshwater-jellyfish-cres…

Early Morning Whitetail

While kayaking the Little River, I was able to observe a small Whitetail Deer drinking at the water's edge. I enjoy exploring the Little River by boat because it allows me to see a number of species that I may not be able to see on the land. Having no natural predators in the water, deer are normally patient and allow paddlers to come much closer to them than people on foot. I hope to see this doe again sometime!
