Seward Range Wildlife

Spent a perfect summer day hiking Seward, Donaldson, and Emmoms last weekend. While there were nice views from Donaldson, I spent much of the day admiring the life on the forest floor. Toads were abundant, even above 4,000ft. From left to right: Red eft (juvenile Eastern Newt), American toad, White Admiral butterfly, Canadian bunchberry.

Green Frog

Just doing an introductory Nature Up North intern scavenger hunt and was lucky enough to stumble across this little guy right off the Kip Track.

Hearing Spring's First Frogs!

We were driving to Ogdensburg with the window down and you could hear the frogs so clearly just peeping away!

Wood Frog

Wood frogs are found all over the North Country. They blend in to their environments very well (as seen in the second picture) with a brown or tan color, and have a dark eye mask.

Mink Frog

As our group walked by a large puddle covering the trail, frogs started jumping into the water. The mink frog has an irregular spot pattern, and a spot on the side of its head, called a tympanum.

Pickerel Frog

When passing a pond, I spotted a pickerel frog sitting on the side. While walking towards it, it hopped into the water and swam away. Sadly for the frog, its camouflage was not the best. Even while covered in a layer of silt, the frog looked extremely bright.

Leopard Frog

In the middle of the night, I was walking back to my house, and saw a frog jump. Earlier I had posted a picture of a pickerel frog, and this was a leopard frog. A pickerel frog has squarish-shaped spots that are close together, while a leopard frog has circular spots that are far apart.

Eastern American Toad

I saw one toad while walking outside at night, and the other at mid-day.

Pickerel Frog

Stumbled upon a frog sitting next to the barn at my house.
