Canoeing / Kayaking
Floating Garden
What a beautiful weekend to be paddling through a floating garden of aquatic plants. I've seen plenty of water lilies before, anyone have a guess as to what the purple flower with the bumble bee might be?
Bald Eagle Fishing
Kayaking through Fish Creek yesterday I saw movement along the shore, which at first I thought was someone pulling their kayak onto a carry over. At second glance, I realized that this was a Bald Eagle pulling apart a fish for lunch. I approached it slowly and tried to snap a few quick pictures but didn't want to disturb it. My guess is that this was a young eagle who had just matured because the head wasn't entirely white yet. You can still see a little brown streak along the side.
Mayfly Exoskeletons
These Mayfly exoskeletons are floating everywhere.
Canoeing in the Adirondacks with Erika
This was a gorgeous day to be out on the water!
Fish Creek Frolic
Perfect day to take my sister from Chicago for a paddle in the Adirondacks. We started at Follensby Clear Pond and paddled around to Fish Creek for lunch. Brought the two dogs - first canoe for Gus the puppy. Clear sky, temps about 65, and lots of dragonflies to keep the bugs at bay!
Fishfly
This stonefly (?) was on the surface of the water, so I picked it up with my kayak paddle. Great antennae!
Dragonfly
I was drifting along the shoreline of what I call Mink Cove across the river from Higley Flow State Park. A dragonfly was clinging to the stem of a Carex sedge right at the water's edge. It had apparently emerged from the water, and one of its wings didn't inflate fully. A dragonfly friend says it's probably a female Clubtail.
Mink Moves
I was in my boat on the St. Lawrence River near the lower campsites of Jacques Cartier State Park near Morristown NY. I was with my brother Tim who saw something black and furry running on the grass near the edge of the water. I turned the boat around and saw it was a family of mink kits that were exploring there world. We actually got some pictures of an adult carrying one of the kits back to their den near the banks of the River. It was exciting to see.
