On an afternoon walk along the bank of the Bouquet River, I caught a glimpse of some early foliage overhanging the water. The Red Maple (Acer rubric) is not only the first tree to flower in the spring, it is among the first deciduous trees turning color in autumn. Here, the two trees display varying and early stages of abscission.
