Goodnow Mountain

Saturday’s (12/28/2019) weather wasn’t the sunniest but was perfect for hiking. Cool, but not cold, and very little snow and NO mud. Our destination of choice was the Goodnow Mountain fire tower in Newcomb NY (east of Long Lake). The trail is on the SUNY ESF Newcomb campus.

The 4.4-mile (round trip) trail gains about 1100’ of elevation in reaching the summit of the 2690’ mountain. The trail is very well thought out, and never overly steep. The trail leads through several forest types, the last (and most interesting) is through a boreal forest of small, yet hardy spruce and fir trees.
