Out On a Run

I was out running along the Kip trail in Canton, New York and came across one of my favorite flowers. Later I was inspired to look up more on how to use sunflower oil in cooking and if it is healthier than other oils. I found that sunflower oil is considered to be healthier than other oils containing, 79 percent monounsaturated fat, 7 percent polyunsaturated fat and 14 percent saturated fat, which is almost the same composition as extra-virgin olive oil. Later on today I found out that substituting sunflower oil for butter in brownies doesn't taste much different and is a bit healthier for you.

Helianthus annuus; common sunflower

I might be wrong, but these look a bit more like black-eyed susans (genus Rudbeckia). A hasty internet search indicates that they are North American natives that do well in disturbed soil. I don't know of too many people that eat these.

I agree with Marla -- black-eyed susans.
