Finding these tree bark pieces on the floor of the forest was a real treat for me because I knew a porcupine had been there. Peckerwood use they hard adapted bills to peck the trees, looking for insects in the trees. The tree was a sugar maple and upon further inspection, the bird had really caused a lot of damage to the tree and I was wondering how it was going to recover and heal itself. One thing I found interesting about this image is the tree matter on the floor of the forest will decompose and nourish the other life in the forest.
