Season
Needle ice and hoar frost
The trails at the nature center were covered with needle ice this morning. It crunched underfoot over whole miles of trail and you could see it everywhere. Have never seen so much! There was also hoar frost on leaves close to the ground and hanging from trees. Made for a very cool walk!
Snowvember
One of my favorite features of the North Country is our beautiful skies. This morning the trees are outlined with snow and the colors of the sky were gorgeous. I love the nature in my backyard!
Evening paddle
Had a lovely evening paddle on the Grasse and Little Rivers. With all the rain recently, the Grasse was running so high it was difficult to paddle upriver. We saw a muskrat along the banks of the Little River.
Winged friend
A beautiful dragonfly decided to join us in apple picking at Fobare's Fruits!
Autumnal puddles
Even puddles in autumn look pretty! The reflection of clear blue sky and autumnal foliage in a puddle can be heavenly!
High Rock on the Oswegatchie River
The trip to High Rock is an annual paddle for me- it is a classic Adirondack paddle that I never tire of. The leaves are past peak, but the spruce & pine still offer vibrant greens to the landscape. The water is very low right now and makes paddling a bit difficult. There are a few beaver dams that are obstacles and there are a few other tight spots that will hopefully be taken care of with the spring high water. Round trip is a little over 7 miles round trip.
misty morning at Huckleberry Lake
Camped in the Huckleberry Lake lean-to overnight and woke up to a calm misty morning on the lake. No other people in sight and you really feel like you're out there after a quick mile or so hike!
Bog River & the overlook
This is my all-time favorite trek in the Adirondacks. The paddle is along the Bog River (Piercefield) from Low's lower dam to the upper. From Hitchens Pond, we hiked to the overlook which gives amazing views of the Bog River basin, the High Peaks and the Horseshoe Lake wild forest. On the paddle out, we spotted a nice bull moose along the water's edge. The leaves are not quite peaked yet, but probably will be within the next week or so. The trips total mileage is about 8.5 miles (boat & boots combined).
Autumnal bounty
So grateful that I can still enjoy beauties in my garden. This morning my orange dahlias bloom majestically adorned by rain droplets from last night. My red peppers look so delicious ... what more can I ask on this beautiful day in Potsdam NY?
Timeout
While St. Lawrence University brought in fall 2019 with a power outage, I enjoyed taking this opportunity to step away from electronic technology and went on a walk to appreciate the beauty of nature. Such an amazing breath of fresh air!
