People in Nature

Head in the clouds upside down!

Kayaking with a friend on the Raquette River, Stump Bay near Higley State Park the water was like glass so the reflections were amazing!

A bird in the Hand

It was a snowy evening at camp and my daughter had a handful of corn and a chickadee landed right in her hand to see what she was holding!

Massena Boys and Girls Club Fishing on the St. Lawrence River

The Nature Up North team had a great time fishing with the Massena Boys and Girls Club on the St. Lawrence River today. We caught some small yellow perch and also spotted a bowfin swimming and some Osprey flying overhead!

Encounter Quest at Heritage Park

Had a nice morning exploring at Heritage Park as a part of the Nature Up North Teacher Workshop. What a beautiful day to be outside and take some encounter photos!

Mount Arab Star Gazing

Watching the stars from the fire tower on top of Arab Mountain is a nice way to cool down after a hot summer day. I set my camera up on a rock at the summit to capture this view while I climbed to the top of the fire tower with my flashlight.

The Big Pine

This old growth white pine in Wanakena may be the largest tree in St. Lawrence County. Estimated to be 300+ years old, it somehow avoided the loggers' saws when this area was heavily logged in the early 1900s. These photos are my attempt at taking a vertical panorama; photos really can't do this mighty tree justice. Check out more info on how to get there at: http://www.cliftonfineadk.com/#!bigpine/csmy

Outdoor lakeside concert

Enjoying the Lake Placid Sinfonietta concert along the shore of Mirror Lake as they perform their "Winging It" concert.

Little River Critters

We spotted a baby muskrat and two young deer while paddling along the Little River today. We startled the muskrat and it swam across the river right in front of us. Look closely for the deer on the left bank in the patch of purple pickerelweed flowers. Unfortunately the deer ran away before I could line up a good shot, but a nice encounter nonetheless.

Birds, bugs, and bullfrogs at Indian Creek Nature Center

A morning bird walk with Sue Wilson of St. Lawrence University and the NNY Audubon Society led to encounters with many species of birds (but few good pictures of them), dragonflies and damselflies, chipmunks, bullfrogs, and mosquitoes. The bird in the second photo is an American Red Start.
