Gore Mountain: Sunrise On Echo

This morning I was setting gates for a race at Gore Mountain. I was already on the lift before the sun rose and I was able to get a great shot of the sun peering over the mountains as we set gates on Echo. Living the Adirondacks has been an incredible experience, I have had great work opportunities and living in nature has been invaluable. In a time when we face a potentially life changing environmental disaster I think it is important to enjoy things like skiing and outdoor play in the winter while it is still available to us.

Lyon Mountain Hike

A friend and I took advantage of a perfect bluebird day to get a proper winter hike in before the spring thaw. We took the new, longer but less steep trail on the climb, then bombed down the old trail in the fluffy snow on the descent. Views were spectacular- we could see Montreal, the Green Mountains, and the Adirondacks from the top.

Saddleback Mountain Chicken Coop Slide

Great scramble up an old slide on Saddleback Mountain with Forest Ranger Scott van Laer and Paxton Rountree-Jablin. Found a next of dark-eyed junkos on the slide and a garter snake making a meal of a toad on the way down. Text and photos at:

Wright Peak Airplane Slides (Left Wing and Right Wing)

Wright Peak's eastern ridge is strewn with the wreckage from a B-47 that crashed in 1962. Parts of the engine still adorn the summit while a 35 foot section of the wing and various other parts lie between Wright and Algonquin. Exploring the wreckage and slides sets the stage for a full-day adventure in the High Peaks...

Picture of Forest Ranger Scott van Laer on the Left Wing Slide & with a small piece of the wreckage.

Wilmington Mountain Cooper Kiln Slide (aka Wilmington Slide)

Formed in 2011 by Tropical Storm Irene, this is a beautiful line up to the summit of Wilmington #1. A bushwhack down to Cooper Kiln Pond afterward makes a perfect addition for the adventurous. Of particular interest was our find of a gastropod fossil in limestone (glacial till) partway down the slide track. Cool differential weather in is photo 3 and a steep headwall tops it off, though it can be avoided via the woods.

Whiteface Mountain Lake Placid Slide

This is the postcard slide that many see from Lake Placid. Formed in the early 1800's, it's been a classic climb since the days of Verplanck Colvin. Details available at www.mackenziefamily.com/46/46r.html

Gothics East Face (Rainbow Slide) 2013 February 23

The photos are from a 2013 ice climb up Gothics' East Face aka Rainbow Slide. The route we (Anthony Seidita and I) 'put up' is called Gothic Revival and rated NEI2. The line leads within 150' of the summit proper, but beware of a long bushwhack below and short and brutal bushwhack above.

Giant Mountain Dipper Slide

The photos are from a slide traverse of Giant Mtn. with friend David Gomlack. We ascended the Dipper, descended the Eagle and ascended the Diagonal slide over about 10 hours in July of 2014. Full details and photos may be found at the following link.
