Snowy Summit of Lyon Mountain
A chilly but beautiful summit on Lyon Mountain. We had a great skin up and ski down in the fresh snow. Great to have winter back again!
Khyber's Slide on Lower Wolfjaw - Icy and Cold
FULL STORY: http://forums.adkhighpeaks.com/showthread.php?t=27312
What to do when bouncing back from the flu? Something relatively tame and under 10 miles with good bailout options. Khyber’s Slide on Lower Wolfjaw (just south and over the ridge from Bennies Root Canal) seemed like a perfect option. As a bonus, I’d get another winter bushwhack 46 under my belt if we bushwhacked to the summit.
St. Regis summit
The summit of St. Regis was frozen, but the climb up was not not bad. Used microspikes but no snowshoes.
Ampersand summit
Ampersand, the wind was crazy! Cold but beautiful.
The smaller haystack
Quick hike up to the smaller Haystack. Beautiful views.
Mount Mutumbla
I stopped while driving along Rte. 3 west of Tupper Lake to take this photo of Mount Mutumbla, the highest point in St. Lawrence County at 2,688 ft. I'd love to explore its long ridgeline, but Mutumbla and the surrounding forests are privately owned by timber companies and leased to hunting clubs.
Eagle feasting
video of an eagle feasting on a deer carcass and coyote that was very leery to approach
MacIntyre Range Thanksgiving Weekend
After a brisk night of camping, we set out early for an outing on Wright, Algonquin and Iroquois. Some weather rolled in by the time reached Iroquois, but overall a great day in the mountains in full-on winter conditions. I'm always impressed by the resilience of the spruce/fir trees at high elevation, which remain totally caked in snow and ice throughout the winter.
Ice Climbing on Giant's East Face: 2014 December 7
Some days are memorable because of the challenges we experience. Perhaps it’s the harsh conditions or something internal we’re battling. Other days are simply perfect. Our climb last Sunday was the latter. Weather was around 10 degrees, skies were cobalt blue and the conditions on the great face of Giant Mountain offered plenty of ice (up to WI3). The sunset we witnessed surpassed any I’ve seen—better than Mallory Square in Key West, better than the beaches of FL (and they can be good).
