Canoeing / Kayaking
Loons on Follensby Clear Pond
Canoeing in 2 strip canoes my father made with my parents and wife. Best loon shots are courtesy of Deb MacKenzie.
Azurific
8-8-14 “Azurific” - There is not a morning that I don’t look forward to making the turn around Split Rock in my kayak and having the panorama of the south end of Lake Ozonia and Mt. Azure beyond come into view. Some mornings the scene is better than others....none are ever a disappointment. This one made me put on the brakes...set down my paddle....take a few photos to get the camera settings I like...then just lay back for a few minutes and watch....it doesn’t take long for this scene to change...not at this time in the morning.
What Is Wrong With This Picture?
8-8-14 "What's Wrong With This Picture?" - As I was paddling my kayak at warp speed yesterday morning...concentrating on my arm movements...stretching that left achilles tendon on the foot peg....my breathing pattern....why the "needs servicing" light came on in my truck yesterday...what fruit I would use in my Nutribullet for breakfast....things I need to get done before I head to San Fran....why Tiger Woods even bothers...where are the loons this morning....etc, I looked up and was startled. Late winter....now this! My thoughts switched to firewood and Florida....not yet!!
Amazing
8-6-14 “Amazing” - From my cottage I could tell very early on that it was going to be a spectacular morning for photography...so I took Nikki on her poopy walk extra early and brought a camera with me as I jumped in the kayak for my daily paddle. I wasn’t disappointed...it was a photographer’s dream.
Kayaking on the Grasse River
This is a great place to kayak. It's easy to access and easy paddling for kids. We put it by the bridge in Canton (next to SLU) and paddled down to Taylor Park and back. It was about 3 miles.
Paddle Trip on Little River
Beautiful Kayak trip that was sponsored by Nature Up North. Peaceful, perfect weather, great group to go with. We had 17 people from Claxton Hepburn Hospital, gathered by their Wellness Team. Evening after work was a perfect time to unwind, I think I can speak for all, this was a complete success, we even had a couple newbies to Kayaking who left there with the intention of doing it again. Thank you "nature up north" for helping with this event!
Summer Fun
Awesome fun swimming, kayaking, looking for turtles, frogs and fish with the kids and exploring the aquatic life and beauty!
Summer on the St. Lawrence
Enjoyed a beautiful evening kayaking 5 miles down the St. Lawrence with my son. We saw:
dozens of birds
two jumping fish
one row boat
one much faster boat
four golfers
one lovely sunset on the river...Summer in Northern NY is really nice!
Osgood Pond
Starting at Church Pond, we made our way to Osgood with many detours to explore meandering marshy areas. Great trip for a relaxing afternoon!
Tupper Lake Paddle
Did some exploring where Tupper Lake narrows back into the Raquette River at its north end. Climbed up on a nice rocky outcrop and was happy to find wild blueberries clinging to a tiny bit of soil in a crack in the rock. I noticed I was not the only one snacking in this spot, with evidence that something (river otter? raccoon?) had been snacking on mussels nearby. Also paddled by some pond lily (Nymphaea odorata). Much to see on Adirondack waterways this time of year.
