Robert G. Wehle state park, Henderson NY.
A favorite destination during sunny & windy days is the Robert G. Wehle state park in Henderson NY. During the spring and winter months, this is a perfect place to practice social distancing. (We saw only three people that day).
This park is on the shores of Lake Ontario and has an interesting history.
Horseshoe Pond in Gale (Piercefield) NY.
Cold but bright days still make for great social distancing adventures. Earlier this week I did some hiking around Horseshoe Pond in Gale (Piercefield) NY.
This pond and several others have a nice network of trails and waterways open for public use at certain times thanks to a conservation easement between the Boy Scouts of America and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. The Massawepie Easement is closed for public recreation from June 15th to August 31st each year.
GULF STREAM TRAIL AT JAYVILLE
In keeping with the social distancing guidelines, I have been seeking out some lesser-known/used trails as well as staying local. This trail I found by looking over the DEC’s website. This hike was to Gulf Stream in the Aldrich Pond Wild Forest, Pitcarian NY.
Colvin’s Great Corner- Aldrich NY
We finally got a chance to hike to Colvin's Great Corner monument today. A long (12 miles) but rewarding trip that I can finally scratch off my list. We hiked south from the old Schuller estate in Aldrich (Fine). This was a great day of social distancing- we saw one family camping at the Streeter Lake lean-to.
The monument was set in 1904 to give a more fitting marker to the point of the Totten & Crossfield and Macomb lines, and St Lawrence & Herkimer county lines.
STARK RESERVOIR -SOUTH COLTON
Despite the recent hot streak we’ve been experiencing, Monday morning was perfect for an early paddle on 650-acre Stark Falls Reservoir in South Colton. This was also a great place for social distancing, I never saw another soul.
BAKER WOODS PRESERVE – SOUTH
I recently visited the Baker Woods Preserve in Natural Bridge NY and hiked the northern trails. I was well impressed and made the trek back to take on the southern trails. The one thing that sets these apart from the northern trails is the fact that they are one the other (south) side of the Indian River. You access these trails by boat.
Pitchfork Pond- Tupper Lake NY
We had a short but enjoyable social distancing paddle over the weekend. This one was at the 35-acre Pitchfork Pond, Tupper Lake NY. Depending on the map you look at, it’s either on the Kildare Road or the Willis Pond Rd. The Pond Lies just east of Mount Matumbla and at one time was home to “the other” Childwold Station. I refer to it as the other because there was another Childwold Station near Conifer and Mt Arab which I have been familiar with for some time. The railroad station of the same name near Pitchfork Pond has just recently found its way onto my radar.
BOG RIVER & HITCHINS POND Piercefield NY
Although this week was a scorcher, Tuesday was nice for a paddle up the Bog River from Low’s Lower dam to Hitchins Pond and the upper dam. This is always a favorite paddle of mine, and I usually make the trip three or four times a year. This trip was special as it was my daughter's first visit to the Horseshoe area.
