Dendritic Crystal with Sectorlike ends (2011.1.d1)

This 2011.1.d1 crystal was collected on January 15, 2011. Using Magano and Lee (1966), this snowflake is classified as ā€œP2dā€ , which is ā€œa dendritic crystal with sectorlike ends ā€. The growth of this snow crystal (and its resultant morphology) was controlled by weather conditions during its decent in the atmosphere. The following atmospheric conditions are recorded by this snow crystal: a temperature of between -12 and -14 degrees Celsius and above the Saturated water line. Basically, this snow crystal records the chaotic series of events from deposition of water vapor on a nucleus (e.g., dust particle) to collection upon reaching the ground. The crystal started to form above the water saturation zone in the sky. The crystals begin to form and fall, adding to the crystal as time passes which creates the sectorlike plates.
