Nature Up North, the St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council, and the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program are collaborating to bring you a workshop of identifying and reporting the invasive pest hemlock woolly adelgid!
Taking place on Friday, March 20th from 1pm - 2:30pm at the Wachtmeister Field Station, this workshop will introduce you to identifying hemlock trees, the hemlock woolly adelgid, and how to use the iMap Invasives phone application to report sightings.
This event will start at the Wachtmeister Field Station, located on outer Park St. in Canton on the left after the bridge, where we will cover species ID and the application. Then, we'll move outdoors to the Kip trail where we'll find hemlock trees to practice on.
Participants should be prepared for slippery and muddy conditions. This event will take place rain or shine. Phones are recommended, but not required.
Hemlocks are ecologically important due to the unique environmental conditions they create under their dense canopies. Removal of hemlocks from NYS ecosystems can dramatically change ecosystem processes and may result in the loss of unique plants and wildlife. By participating in this workshop, you are joining a growing network of community members monitoring critical changes in our local nature!
