First Hike of 2026 - Ferrone Woods

Event date and time
January 4, 2026 - 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Travel and Parking Update:

The Ferrone Woods Preserve sits on the south-western end of the Black Lake Road (pinned here). After consulting with members of the Indian River Lakes Conservancy, the organization that stewards this trail, they informed us that sections of the road coming from the south through Rossie may be unmaintained, and alternate routes coming from the north are recommended. If your GPS takes you through Rossie, divert north to Brasie Corners, take a left on to route 58, then left on to Hutton Road. This will take you to Black Lake Rd. where you'll take a left, and the trailhead is 3/4 - 1 mile down this road on the left.

For parking, we'll all put our cars on the trailhead side of the road to allow local traffic through. The road is thin, with minimal margins.

Join Nature Up North Project Manager Dan for our first hike of the year: a snowshoe near Black Lake!

We'll be exploring Ferrone Woods, a new preserve added to the Indian River Lakes Conservancy in 2023. This expanding trail network currently hosts about a 1-mile loop through mixed forests, highlighted by unique open spaces and a view overlooking Black Lake.

Join us at 10:00am on Sunday, January 4th. Sign up using this link, where you can also indicate your need for snowshoes. Limited pairs available! For GPS directions, please use this google maps pin.
