Celebrate 10 Years of Nature Up North With Us!

By Kayla Edmunds

Nature Up North is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary this year!

2013 marked the launch of natureupnorth.org (this very website) and the first year we hired a cohort of summer interns and hosted free events for the community all summer long! In the 10 years since that first summer we've hosted over 175 public events, hired and trained 95 St. Lawrence University students, launched 3 citizen science projects, and more!

And we couldn't have done it without YOU! Thank you to our amazing community - in 10 years you've submitted over 760 Monitor My Maple observations, shared 3,049 Encounter posts (and counting), and continued to join us year after year in learning about and appreciating our amazing North Country environment.

To celebrate 10 years we have a few fun-filled weeks planned for the end of April! The kickoff event will be our 7th Annual Earth Day 7K Trial Run/Walk on Saturday, April 22nd at 9:00am starting at the Wachtmeister Field Station. This event, hosted every year on the Kip and Saddlemire Trails, is one of our biggest of the year and an important fundraiser to help support the free, public programming all summer long. Plus, it's a great way to get out and explore a local 4.4 mile loop that offers a run through a variety of habitats - scenic forests, wetlands, and more.

Also on our calendar we have a Community Celebration Campfire! Although our campfire series usually doesn't kickoff until the summer, what better way to celebrate our 10 year birthday than by enjoying s'mores AND a slice of cake around a warm fire? We can't think of one! This event will take place at the Wachtmeister Field Station, starting at 6:30pm on Saturday, April 29th. No registration required - just show up!

The end of April is a great time for maple monitoring - which is why we'll be hosting Maple Monitoring and a Guided Hike with the ADK Laurentian Chapter on Sunday, April 30th. For more info and to register click the event title link!

Stay tuned here on the website and on our social media, @natureupnorth on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for updates as we add more events and to see us share highlights, bloopers, and more from 10 years with NUN!

You can find more details and registration information for all of the events listed above on our Events page: www.natureupnorth.org/events-up-north

When not leading programs or hunting for bugs, she loves hiking, cross-country skiing, bird-watching, or a good puzzle.
