Baby White-tailed Deer

As I was hiking on my uncle's property in the foothills of the Adirondacks I stumbled upon this little guy. This is a baby White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), who was left by his mother under some brush to shelter him from predators while she went and foraged for food. I was able to go right up to him without him being afraid due to the fact that he was too young to know anything of predators under his mother's constant supervision. This was an incredible experience because I had never seen one so close and so docile, especially with no mother in sight. I returned 15 minutes after leaving and the mother had already come back for him. Every year over 500,000 deer hunters contribute nearly $690 million to New York State's economy which makes these animals constantly move around, especially in hunting season. I find myself lucky to have had such an experience. I realize now that I probably should not have touched the little fella, but I was curious at the time and I thought he may be injured.
