Lampson Falls is located in St. Lawrence County near Clare NY. While many people believe that Lampson Falls is situated on the south branch of the Grasse River, in actuality the falls are located on the main section of the Grasse River, downstream from the south branch and upstream from the north branch. The Grasse River was named after Francois Joseph Pau de Grasse, who was a French admiral greatly admired for his role in the battle of Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. The source of the Grasse is a series of smaller ponds, lakes and streams in the close by towns of Russell, Clare and, lastly, Clifton. The Grasse river flows into the St. Lawrence River in Massena. The actual falls are around 40 feet tall and 100 feet wide. They are shallow and broad faced. Lampson Falls offers a popular “put in” for white water canoes and kayakers in addition to intersecting the many hiking trails throughout the area. This image immediately captivated my attention upon going through my photos. The wide panorama of rushing water is extremely powerful and instantly draws the viewer’s attention. Upon closer inspection, the water of the falls thunders by. However you can also see the mist forming above the falls and calving mini- glaciers of ice build up emptying into a wide pool with hundreds of floating chunks of ice. It almost appears that every form of water (liquid, solid and gas) is present in the photo, which I reflected in the title.
