This photo was taken on Coakley Island in Downtown Canton. Coakley and Falls Islands are located in the Grasse River. They are connected by bridge and in the 19th century were the "heart" of the manufacturing district of Canton. One of the major manufacturing facilities present on Coakley and Falls Islands was the Silas Parker Sawmill that had the capacity to cut between 5,000 and 10,000 board feet of timber a day. The Mill was located near the present Grange Mill. The mill changed ownership and burned down in 1885.Two falls border both sides of the island. Cascade Falls on one side and Rushton falls on the other. Ruston falls is named after J Henry Rushton world renowned boat builder (specially canoes) and Canton local. This photo is taken at one of my favorite places close to the campus of St. Lawrenc:, The Grasse River Heritage trail. It is extremely close to downtown Canton but once you step on the trail you are a world away. This photo instantly captured my attention because of the beautiful intricacies of the melting ice and snow. The embankment of the river almost became a cave with ice stalactites and stalagmites forming up and down the rift.
