Raquette River Otters

This spot, where Tupper Lake narrows into the Raquette River, is ideal for river otters. The river here never freezes completely, allowing otters plenty of openings to slip into the icy water and catch fish. Several times during the day I saw them on the ice, only to run outside with my camera and discover that they'd disappeared into the water again. Finally three of them stuck around for a while. I watched them hunt for about ten minutes before they moved down river. Awesome creatures.

ice storm 2013

Wanted to capture the beauty of nature from the ice storm 2013!

9-day-old ice-storm byproducts still causing problems

A full 9 days after the 2013 ice storm byproduct ice damage is still occurring. The steeply pitched barn roof easily cleared the ice shortly after the storm; the shallow pitch on the garage has not! This, approximately 1-meter overhang attests to the thickness of ice/snow that has accrued on roof tops around the county (>10cms). A keen eye will spot the power line from the garage to the barn - knocked down 8 days after the storm leaving no electricity to the barn.

More from the Ice Storm

I am constantly amazed at the ability of the small birds to persist through something like this ice storm. Certainly our feeders have been active.

Won't be hanging laundry on the line for a spell, but the yard sure looks beautiful with the sumac adding a splash of color. Holiday lights make up for the work of chipping the vehicle free from the ice for so many of us who don't have a garage...
