A Raven in Rehab at the Tupper Lake Wild Center
This is a photo of a Raven, most likely the Common Raven, taken at the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. This is one of two Ravens that are at the Center. The Center has taken in these birds because they are in need of assistance, most likely because of some physical ailment they have. With that said, this Raven would most likely not be able to survive on its own in the wild. This species of bird is most often characterized by its color scheme: dark black feathers accompanied by large, black marble eyes.
Grasse River Movement
This was taken back behind the Canton Pavilion right after a day of rain. The edge of the walkway is usually a little bit marshy and muddy, but in this picture the area around the river is completely flooded. As you can kind of see in the photo, the paved path disappears and the trees which are usually at the edge of the river are now part of the river. I think this photo is interesting because of the way the sun is shining through - the shadow of the trees kind of measures how much has flooded.
Stone Valley Movement
This photo was taken at Stone Valley, a recreation area with a few miles of ADK trails on both sides of the river. The river here flows against the bedrock "grain" which can make interesting marks (like potholes) in the rock. Both sides along the river are heavily wooded. I find this photo interesting because of the contrast in trees - bright green where the sun is and almost black in the shadows. I also like how powerful the water looked at this waterfall.
Spring Lambs
These sweet lambs were at a farm on the side of the road in Colton, NY. We were driving by and I wanted to stop and visit the sheep, lambs, cow, llama and chickens that were all in the same pen. Colton is close to the Adirondacks and has the Racquette river running through it. The cow and llama came right up to the edge of the fence, but the sheep and lambs were more hesitant. I like the way the third lamb is peaking over its siblings at us in this picture. I also thought all the shadows were really interesting.
Balancing Act
CLOSE UP 2: This was another picture of the perfect, wet, snowball snow at Lampson Falls. This was taken in the wooded area on the path to the actual falls. I liked how precariously this snowball was balancing on this tall stump. It reminded me of Andy Goldsworthy's work creating beautiful, impossible sculptures out of natural materials.
Mini Snowman
CLOSE UP: This picture was taken on our class trip to Lampson Falls. We went there to do some tracking, but there wasn't any fresh snow so it was a little bit difficult. There were a lot of signs of porcupines - though we didn't see one. We learned that the primary (land) predator of a porcupine is a fisher which goes for the part of the porcupine without quills (its face). Because there was no fresh snow and it had rained earlier in the week, this mini snowman was still in perfect form though it looks like the rain took away part of it.
Schroon Lake Landscape
This picture was taken from the porch of my family cabin on Schroon Lake in the Adirondacks. The cabin is towards the end of the ten mile lake with dense forest behind and some large rock faces along the edge of the lake. The lake is a graben meaning it is a sunken piece of land between faults. The town itself was originally based on lumber and tanneries. I like this picture because of the way the porch railing and the overhanging tree frame it.
Snow Pillows
LANDSCAPE: This photo was taken at Garnet Hill, a x-country ski place close to North River, NY. It is protected state land with miles of groomed x-country trails and hiking/biking trails in the summer. Amongst the Adirondack mountains, it is mostly forest and woodland with a view of Thirteenth lake. There is a garnet mine close by and the tailings left over from the mining piled up and created a pond right near where this picture was taken. I really like the snow pillows that formed on this little river and the way the birch trees frame the edges of the photo.
