"Pancake" Ice at Lampson Falls

It was a brisk but beautiful morning to explore Lampson Falls in early winter. The falls had not frozen over fully yet and to my surprise, the conditions were just right to form "pancake ice," which are small patches of floating ice that look a lot like round pancakes!

Great Blue Heron fishing on the Deer River Flow

Last Friday was possibly my last kayaking adventure for this year. My cousin and I put in on the Deer River Flow off of Route 30 and paddled for 5 hours. We reached Horseshoe Pond and on the return trip encountered 3 Great Blue Heron. I floated near the put in and watched this heron fishing. It was so focused it didn't seem to mind that I was fairly near taking its picture.

Rain over Grindstone Island

I was photographing from Wellsley Island State Park when spot showers started moving across Grindstone Island to the west. Since it was twilight some of the sky was lit by the setting sun creating the red strip across the horizon.

After the Storm

A thunderstorm lumbered through the area, leaving this incredible sunset in its wake.

Winter's End

The ice rose majestically, almost six feet in the air, as it ended its Winter journey.

Ice Out

This was a once-in-a-lifetime scene as the fog rose from the ice as it moved and heaved on Fourth Lake.
