Community Campfire with Music from the Bee Children!

Event description

This week's campfire will be joined by the Bee Children, a band comprised of Canton's John Collins, Traci Fordham, and Miguel Hernandez. Please join us for an evening of s'mores, conversation, and music! This event is for all ages. Please feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on while you enjoy the music, we will have chairs available as well.

Night Hike at Jacques Cartier State Park

Have you ever wondered what happens in the woods when the sun goes down and the creatures of the night come out? Join us for a night hike where one of our naturalists will guide you through the darkness to shed light on some of the amazing animal and human adaptations to the nighttime. Darkness elevates the importance of our senses outside of sight. Explorers will focus on sensory perception as they become more comfortable in the darkness and enjoy an evening of learning and exploring the night.

Survival Skills Workshop at Robert Moses State Park

Event description

While the best survival tool is good preparation, it is good to have a few skills on hand in case you are ever caught in a sticky situation! Join us for a fun afternoon to learn how to plan ahead and prepare, try your hand at fire building, test your compass skills, and learn some other backcountry basics. This event is for all ages and experience levels but is focused on beginner skills.

If you're in the Canton area and need a ride to the event, we will provide transportation from the St. Lawrence University Brewer Bookstore at 10am. Please RSVP if you plan on riding with us!

Jacques Cartier State Park - Birds of Prey

Join Rick West at Jacques Cartier State park for an evening of raptors and other birds of prey. Rick has worked with birds of prey for over thirty years and has been educating for twenty years. He possess a variety of state and federal raptor licenses and is excited to share some of his knowledge (and birds) with explorers of all ages!

En Plein Air sketching and painting. 2 pm, Sunday, July 7, at Grasse River Heritage Park in Canton.

Come join Adirondack Mountain School painter David Crowell for an afternoon of art out in nature. Practice sketching or painting from life on location. The Grasse River Heritage Park on Coakley's and Falls Islands offers many interesting subjects for art. Bring a sketchbook and pencil or pen, or bring your painting gear. Bug spray is recommended as we will be sitting in one spot for sketching.

Cucumbers, Clovers, and Other Edibles of the Forest: A Guided Nature Adventure at Higley Flow

Cucumbers in the woods!? Please join us for a nature walk collaboration with a naturalist from Higley Flow to look at some of the tasty treats of the woods. Explorers will adventure out into Higley Flow's trail system that travels through different ecosystems checking out the natural features of one of New York's most beautiful parks. Participants will get an introduction to some of the edible plants in the area while enjoying a short walk on the park grounds.

Invertebrate Day at Jacques Cartier!

Event description

Join us for a day of creepy crawlers! Small invertebrate larvae are excellent indicators of water quality. We will be searching streams for the larva of dragonflies, mayflies, beetles and water pennies! Using what we find we will be able to draw conclusions about the water in a few different streams. This program is for explorers of all ages and is great for young ones looking to get down and dirty with some cool water bugs!
