Sunday Jaunt up Scarface

A leisurely midday walk in the Saranac Lakes Wild Forest led by the St Lawrence University Outing Club. The temperature was cooler than expected, but perfect for hiking. The trail was generally flat for the first 2/3 of the ascent, meandering past railroad tracks, a crumbling concrete foundation, and over a couple of wooden bridges. Upon reaching the ridgeline a view opened up, but the false summit and the true summit were densely tree-covered. Proceeding from the false summit to the true summit the trail became both narrower and windier, leading one participant to remark: "I think the trail is drunk." The only distinguishing features of the true summit were a well-trod circle of bare rock (all the dirt had been eroded away) and a small handwritten medallion stating "Scarface SUMMIT -3088 ft-". The group returned to the lookout for a snack (highly recommended over staying at the summit). Foliage season was still in its infancy. On the way down we noticed a fair amount of trail erosion which seemed odd for a trail with such minimal marking and a tucked-away entrance. Please, stay on the trail and walk over the waterbars (diagonal-running drainage ditches) instead of around them! When lots of people walk next to the trail it weakens the soil and root structure holding up the surrounding area and makes it more likely to turn into a mud-slurry come spring. Help preserve the integrity of the trail by staying on it! All in all however, a lovely Sunday experience.
