Grasse River
Nature Walk on Cross country @SLU
On a nature walk this afternoon outside of St. Lawrence University. Today was a warmer day than usual resulting in the snow melting and being able to see the ground again!
Snowy Pyrites Adventure
It was a beautiful day for an adventure! The 20°F weather felt unusually warm in the sun after all of the cold temps we have had. I snowshoed from Rt. 47 along the Grasse River to the hydro plant and back. The snow depth was quite variable and had drifted up to knee-height in places. Snowshoes were helpful but the snow was too dry to stay on top of it. Gaiters would be a nice addition next time.
Macroinvertebrates in the Grasse River
I worked with Nature up North to moniter water quality on the Grasse River in Canton, NY and we found a bunch of different macroinvertebrates! I learned that this means that the quality of water here is very good.
Hydrating along the river
Enjoying the greenery along the Grass River on the first day of August
Hart's Falls in February
Beautiful trip with a visiting friend down to the Grasse River near Pyrites to see Hart's Falls (also known as Flat Rocks). The water cascades around a bend in the river here and the long flat rocks feature a spattering of well worn holes formed by years of moving water. Owned by The St. Lawrence Land Trust, the spot is a conservation preserve open to the public- worth a visit any time of year!
Wintergreen Grasse
A thick sheet of Wintergreen blankets the south bank of the Grasse River.
Fall Island I see you!!
Hot, sunny day for a lovely walk along the Grasse River on Fall Islands, Heritage Park. I was lucky enough to spot this beauty staring back at me.
Sandbanks
Beautiful view of the Grasse River on an early morning jog in the fall.
Early summer sunset on the Grasse River
An incredible sunset can sneak up on me; I was far from a perfect trail or an Adirondack peak, but even the islands in the middle of the Grasse River in Canton can show nature. I'm amazed that all of this is in the center of town! Moving north, I passed the bridge to SUNY Canton before heading home.
Ice Sheet Frame
I took this photo in dried river bed on the Grass River. It strikes me because of the natural frame and the lighting caused by the ice sheet. The time of year when I took this photo it is rare to find shallow moving water like this, but when it is available it serves as a steady source of water for nearby animals before the spring comes and the river fills with snow melt and once again turns into a moving metropolis of biodiversity.
