Into the Forest
Taken Wednesday January 29th at Paul Smith’s College in Paul Smith’s, NY

I stopped to take this photo while on our cross-country skiing lab back in January. This was my first time I had ever cross-country skied and found it a great way to explore the woods. I decided to take this picture for a couple of reasons. For one, the shadows show the movement of the setting sun, as they are lying flat on the ground in front of the tree trunks. The straight-line shadows draw you into the conglomeration of trees, which go back very far and take your eyes up to the green tops and against the blue sky. The layering of colors is also neat; from white to brown to green and blue. Shorter days in the winter make it more difficult for trees to collect the light resources that they need for photosynthesis. Also, attaining a sufficient amount of water is difficult for deciduous trees.
