This 2011.1.c2 snow crystal was collected on January 15, 2011. Using Magano and Lee (1966), this snowflake is classified as “R1d” , which is “Rime Stellar Crystal”. The growth of this snow crystal (and its resultant morphology) was controlled by weather conditions during its decent in the atmosphere. The following atmospheric conditions are recorded by this snow crystal: a temperature of between -12 and -15 degrees Celsius and above the Saturated water line, and in the rimed water droplet region. Basically, this snow crystal records the chaotic series of events from deposition of water vapor on a nucleus (e.g., dust particle) to collection upon reaching the ground. The crystal started in a high water saturated zone, which created the rime areas, these are the droplet like features on the crystal. This is actually small water droplets which froze to the crystal high in the clouds before it began its decent.
