Out on a hike at Barnhart I saw a plant I have never seen before. It was in a wooded area somewhat near some water. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the species?

Hi Deirdre, really good question. This is blue cohosh. It's tricky because it looks drastically different when the leaves have fully developed in summer. What looks like multiple purple leaves at this time of year is actually a single, 3-stemmed compound leaf, plus a fruiting stalk on flowering plants. The flowers will mature into small, blue berries.
